The 2011 Christchurch Earthquake, in which 185 people were killed, highlighted deficiencies in the seismic resilience of New Zealand's building stock. In response, the New Zealand Government introduced the EPB Act, requiring the owners of existing buildings to undertake seismic assessment and strengthening within set time frames.
