The University of Canterbury installed three 1.2 MW water-cooled heat pumps linked to groundwater bores, giving simultaneous heating and cooling with heat recovery. They serve five buildings in the science precinct, including Beatrice Tinsley, Ernest Rutherford and Pūtaiao Koiora, as part of the plan to move campus heating off coal. The system has run since March 2025. In its first full year it supplied about 3,525 MWh of heat and 1,083 MWh of cooling, avoiding an estimated 1,485 tonnes of CO₂ compared with coal.
