Te Rua stands on Aitken Street in Thorndon, opposite the National Library, and holds the country's archives. Records from Archives New Zealand, the National Library and Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision are kept here, and a two-level bridge connects it to the library. The building has 10 levels and about 19,300 m² of space, and it is designed to protect the collection through a very large earthquake. It sits on some of the largest base isolators in the world, which let it move up to 1,300 mm in any direction. The outside is wrapped in more than 2,300 bronze panels, with lines in te reo Māori on the facade. The building runs without fossil fuels and has a 5 Green Star design rating. It was completed in 2025 at a cost of $290 million.
