Te Ara Tukutuku is turning the northern end of Wynyard Point from a former petrochemical tank farm into a 5 ha waterfront public space, the largest new open space in Auckland's city centre in 100 years. The name, gifted by mana whenua, refers to the gentle slope of a waka ramp. Plans include a coastal forest, outdoor classrooms, a whare waka, tidal stairs and a waka ramp, marine restoration, an elevated headland and new laneways. Remediation of more than a century of contaminated soil is underway, with enabling works starting in summer 2024/25. The space will support a further 5 ha of marine, commercial and residential development to follow.
