Takurua will replace the University of Canterbury's 50-year-old Recreation Centre with a building nearly twice its size on Kirkwood Fields. It includes two indoor courts, a main gym and a women's gym, spin and group fitness rooms, studios for arts and clubs, a bouldering wall, counselling and physio rooms, and student social spaces. Outside will be a floodlit full-size artificial pitch and a plaza. Construction began in July 2025 with extensive ground improvement. By August 2026 most of the roof was on and work had moved inside. The centre is due to open in 2027.
