The St James Theatre on Queen Street opened in 1928 and is a Category 1 heritage building. It has been closed since 2007, and its restoration is now underway with a reopening planned for 2028. The work is bringing back the original Spanish Mission-style frontage and tower, which were boxed in behind a new façade and neon signage in 1953 and lay hidden for about 70 years. Much of the ornate gold, red and blue detailing has survived. The Government and Auckland Council have each committed $15 million to the restoration.
