Maungawhau replaced the old Mt Eden station. It is where the City Rail Link tunnels meet the Western Line. The old station closed in July 2020, and a new station building with four platforms on two levels was built in its place. To bring the CRL out of the ground and into the existing network, two grade-separated junctions and 2 km of new track were built while trains kept running. A new road bridge on Normanby Road replaced a level crossing. Earlier, a stormwater tunnel between Water and Nikau Streets was built to clear the way. The entrance wall has 53 cast glass triangles in lava colours, a nod to Auckland's volcanic field. The station opened with the rest of the CRL on 13 September 2026.
