Victoria University of Wellington is taking down the 11-storey Gordon Wilson Flats and the neighbouring McLean Flats at 320 The Terrace, beside the Kelburn campus. Empty since 2012, the buildings are earthquake-prone with extensive rot and asbestos, and a law change removed their heritage protection. The buildings are being dismantled in stages, starting with hazardous materials. More asbestos than expected pushed the main demolition into the new year, with completion expected in early 2027. The university plans student accommodation on the cleared site.
