Waitematā Station was built as a dead end. For trains to run through it into the City Rail Link, its eastern end had to be reworked as well as its western end. The Britomart East junction was rebuilt, platforms were widened and a platform and concourse were raised. A tunnel wall under Britomart Place was moved, and beams were strengthened. Emergency walkways were added in the existing tunnel, along with new support walls, a new track slab and foundations for signalling. New equipment rooms and driver accommodation were built in the basement of the Chief Post Office. Work began in May 2022, with completion expected in early 2024.
