The main City Rail Link tunnels run from Maungawhau in Mt Eden to Te Waihorotiu in midtown, as deep as 42 m below the city. Each of the two bored tunnels is 1.6 km long, and they connect with the cut-and-cover tunnels under Albert Street to complete the 3.45 km line. They were dug by a tunnel boring machine named Dame Whina Cooper, 130 m long and 7.15 m across. It set off in May 2021, reached Karanga-a-Hape that October and finished the second tunnel on 14 September 2022. This $1.658 billion package also included the two new underground stations, which are listed separately, and long-term maintenance. Construction finished in June 2026, and the line opened to passengers on 13 September 2026.
