Along lower Albert Street, the City Rail Link's twin tunnels were built in a 350 m trench from Customs Street to Wyndham Street. This section links the tunnels under Commercial Bay to the bored tunnels further south. The street was dug open, the tunnels were built in the trench and then covered over. The trench is 18 m deep at its southern end and 8 m at the northern end. A large stormwater main had to be moved first, starting in October 2015, and the Ōrākei Main Sewer was strengthened. Once the tunnels were covered, Albert Street was rebuilt above them. The section was completed in October 2020 with an Infrastructure Sustainability 'Excellent' rating.
