The first stage of the City Rail Link started at Waitematā Station, where the twin tunnels were begun from the old platforms. They run under the Chief Post Office, across lower Queen Street and beneath the Commercial Bay site. This was the first step in turning the dead-end station into a through station. The tunnels pass 14 m below the Chief Post Office. To build them, 14,000 tonnes of the heritage building were moved onto temporary foundations while the basement was dug out. The post office closed in January 2017 and reopened in April 2021. The old Downtown Shopping Centre was demolished in 2016 to make way for the tunnels, and Queen, Tyler and Galway Streets were rebuilt above. The work was completed in October 2021.
