The Chief Post Office at the foot of Queen Street opened in 1912 and is a Category 1 heritage building. Its ground floor is the main entrance to Waitematā Station, and the three floors above have been restored as about 5,500 m² of offices. The work gave the building a full seismic upgrade. Ceilings and fit-out added in the 2000s were stripped out and the original kauri floors were brought back. The old lightwell is now a glass-roofed atrium. Its floor holds century-old stained-glass domes that still let light down into the station below. There is also a 14 m chandelier and a new rooftop terrace. Reusing the building produced 97% less upfront carbon than a new build, and the project targets 6 Green Star, which would make it the country's first 6 Green Star heritage building.
