Every part of Auckland City Hospital depends on its central plant for power, medical gases, chilled water, drinking water and fuel. This project replaced the old plant with a new building and a 240 m services tunnel that loops around the Grafton campus. The plant building has 5,230 m² of floor space and sits on triple friction pendulum base isolators. It is designed to Importance Level 4, the standard for buildings that must keep working after a major earthquake, and has a 100-year design life. It stands on 110 piles. The tunnel, 4 m wide and 3.5 m high, was built by cut and cover and carries services between buildings. The work was handed over in 2026 after a four-year build.
