Auckland Airport is building a new domestic jet terminal onto the eastern end of the international terminal. When it opens, domestic and international flights will share one building for the first time since 1977. The two-level terminal covers about 80,000 m², three times the size of today's domestic terminal, with 12 jet gates along a 240 m pier. Passengers changing between a domestic and an international flight will walk indoors in around five minutes, instead of catching a bus or following the painted line between terminals. The new baggage system uses about half the power per bag of the old one. Regional turboprop flights will stay at the existing domestic terminal. Opening is expected in 2028 or 2029.
